The Interview Trap and How to Overcome Your Nerves

You’ve done the hard yards. Your CV is sharp. Your track record speaks for itself. You’ve led teams through transformation, delivered results under pressure, and built a reputation as someone who gets things done. Then the interview invitation arrives and with it, that familiar tightening in your chest. Your heart rate climbs. Your mind races. Suddenly, you’re not the composed leader you know yourself to be. You’re wondering if you’ll blank on the simplest question, stumble over your words, or fail to convey the value you bring. In my coaching business it’s known as the interview trap.

It’s not about competence. It’s about the gap between who you are and who you become under the spotlight of high-stakes selection. And in today’s evolving world of work, getting interview-ready isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a must.

Why Even Seasoned Professionals Get Interview Nerves

Interview anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a normal human response to a situation that feels evaluative, unpredictable, and consequential. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it evolved to do: preparing you for a perceived threat. The problem is, the very physiology that once protected us from predators now sabotages us in boardrooms and video calls.

Common triggers include:

  • Fear of judgment: Worrying you’ll be seen as inadequate, unprepared, or “not enough.”
  • Uncertainty: Not knowing what questions will be asked, who will be in the room, or how you’ll be assessed.
  • High stakes: A single conversation can shape your career trajectory, income, and sense of identity.
  • Past experiences: Previous interviews that didn’t go well can create a feedback loop of anticipatory anxiety.

The irony? The more accomplished you are, the more you have to lose and the more your brain treats the interview as a threat to your status, security, and self-worth.

The Cost of Unmanaged Nerves

When nerves take the wheel, even the most capable professionals underperform. You might:

  • Rush through answers, leaving out critical details.
  • Freeze when asked an unexpected question.
  • Speak too quickly or too softly, undermining your presence.
  • Over-explain or hedge, diluting the impact of your achievements.
  • Fail to convey warmth, confidence, or authenticity.

The result? You walk away knowing you didn’t show up as your best self. And the role goes to someone who may be less qualified but more interview-ready. Working with us ensures you set yourself up for interview success.

Why “Just Prepare More” Isn’t Enough

Most advice for interview nerves boils down to: “Prepare more.” Research the company. Practise your stories. Rehearse your answers. And yes, preparation matters. But for many executives, over-preparation can backfire. It creates rigidity. It amplifies pressure. It turns the interview into a performance you’re desperate to get right rather than a conversation you’re equipped to navigate. I coached a professional last week, we had one conversation and she nailed her interview, got a $40k pay rise and starts in a month’s time. Not bad for one coaching session!

What’s missing is the inner work: the mindset shifts, the physiological regulation, and the structured support that helps you access your full capability under pressure. Lights, camera, ACTION.

A Different Approach: Clarity, Calmness, Confidence

At Nick Roud Coaching, we’ve seen time and again that interview success isn’t about eliminating nerves. It’s about transforming them. Since 2016, we’ve coached professionals across industries and levels to move from anxiety to agency using a framework built on three pillars: clarity, calmness, and confidence. Short, simple and it works.

Clarity: Know Your Story, Own Your Value

Clarity starts with knowing exactly what you bring to the table and being able to articulate it with precision and purpose. We help you:

  • Distil your narrative: Identify the core themes that define your leadership style, achievements, and aspirations.
  • Structure your stories: Use frameworks to deliver concise, compelling answers.
  • Anticipate the curveballs: Prepare for behavioural, situational, and curveball questions without scripting every word.
  • Align with the role: Map your experience to the organisation’s needs, culture, and strategic priorities.

Clarity isn’t about memorising answers. It’s about knowing your material so well that you can adapt in real time without losing your thread. I have seen time and time again people fall into a pit of words and jargon only to hear – hey thanks for coming we will be in touch.

Calmness: Regulate Your Nervous System

Calmness isn’t the absence of nerves. It’s the ability to manage them. We teach practical, evidence-based techniques to lower your physiological arousal and stay grounded under pressure:

  • Box breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat for 2–3 minutes to activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Yes breathing is essential to being present.
  • Reframing anxiety as excitement: Instead of fighting your nerves, label them as energy you can channel into enthusiasm and engagement.
  • Grounding anchors: Plant your feet, relax your shoulders, and focus externally on the conversation not internally on your performance.
  • Pre-interview routines: Build a repeatable ritual that primes your body and mind for peak performance.

These aren’t abstract concepts. They’re tools you can use in the bathroom before a panel interview, in the car before a video call, or in the silence after a tough question.

Confidence: Show Up as Your Best Self

Confidence isn’t arrogance. It’s the quiet certainty that you belong in the room and that you have something valuable to contribute. We help you:

  • Challenge anxious thoughts:
  • Visualise success:
  • Embrace imperfection:
  • Debrief constructively:

Confidence grows when you combine preparation with self-compassion and when you shift your focus from “How am I being judged?” to “How can I add value?”
