What AI Can’t Do The Power of Real Conversations in Career Coaching

We’re seeing an incredible moment in time. Artificial intelligence tools can write your CV, suggest your next career move, even role-play an interview. They’re efficient, accessible and cleaver. But they miss one critical thing: you.

Over the past decades whether you are a senior leader, a CEO or a rising executive, the work isn’t about producing an answer faster. Far from it, it’s about discovery. Discovering what really matters to you. The why behind a career move, the truth about a challenge, and the personal intent behind a decision. I like to remind you that you are the one who is going to live with the decision not the AI tool, you are the one who is going to wake in the early hours not the AI tool, you are the one who will have that gut feeling about something not the AI tool.

AI can do so many things, AI to me reminds me of taking a trip down to my local library in Wallington UK and strolling along the isles looking for that book which I wanted to research something or other about. Grabbing the book and heading home to sit in my room and slowly digest pictures , words etc. AI to me speeds that all up. For many of us we don’t want to rush rather be purposeful.

AI can’t do certain things. It can’t notice when your body language tightens as you talk about your team. It can’t sense that pause when I ask “What’s stopping you/holding you back”? And it certainly can’t hold confidentiality, trust and lived experience the way a human coach does. Just think about that for a few mins. Confidentiality!

The Value of Confidential Conversations.

Priceless. Coaching is built on a foundation here at Nick Roud Coaching of privacy and respect. These are the quiet uninterrupted moments where leaders can peel back the layers without judgement. In our conversations (human that is) there’s no algorithm, no digital echo chamber just pure clarity. Clients often tell me that it’s the first time they’ve said something out loud they’ve been wrestling with for months or even years. That’s where transformation starts. Not with data, but with hones reflection.

Outcomes

A good coaching conversation doesn’t stay theoretical. It’s not a one week residential and all is well in the world, here at Nick Roud Coaching we don’t just analyse we take action. Every session ends with focus. It sets you up for progress. AI can process a mountain of data (remember it’s just the library of all stuff and things) but it can’t hold you accountable, celebrate your progress, or challenge you in a human way. Only a trusted partnership can do that. That’s why we have been around for ten years and plan to be around for decades to come – we remain committed to your success.

So why write this blog today Nick? Well a few things have got under my collar recently and for those of you who have been reading my blogs over the years will know if I write it out it gets out of my head so I can focus on my clients. As technology integrates deeper into the workplace, professionals will need more human guidance, not less. Tools can and will support your career journey but they cannot replace the tested integrity of a confidential respectful and focused coaching relationship. Career coaching isn’t about fixing people. Career coaching is about you discovering your next move on the chess board through open, frank and sometimes blunt conversations.

I use technology here in my practice, we spent tens of thousands on our leadership assessments tools and everyday I utilise email, video conference etc. I write from my heart not from AI, I share thoughts and ideas to help you. Sure I could jump onto some site and sit back with a coffee and press send but I choose not to short change you, we may never work together nor meet but I hope my words and thoughts impact you more than an algorithm, so thanks for reading.

Look after yourself and each other.
