To my daughter Willow.
You may read this when you are older………..
We typically shy away from celebrating and whilst this is a work on for me, today is a very special day here in our household, for today my daughter Willow turns 5!
Not only does she celebrate her special day it is also her very 1st day at school. Birkdale Primary School here in Auckland New Zealand. What a milestone and as she raced to get into her school uniform today I whispered to her that we are super proud of her and love her to bits.
What a privilege to see her grow and develop and whilst we have our ‘shouting matches’ when behaviour is not where we expect it to be I do reflect on what is going on in her little head right now.
As we approached school gates she squeezed my hand a little harder and I gave her the encouragement that she has got this. She led us into her new classroom and started to settle. What made me think about celebrating success is not just to celebrate but to share that message of what is going on in our worlds. As leaders our purpose is to grow others around us! Maybe it’s just a kiwi thing and I am happy to be challenged on this – we must celebrate the small personal things that are important to us.
Having two children is a massive undertaking and I am far away from being an expert dad – I make mistakes and I have to own up to those, what is important is the fact that we all have our own lives to lead and it is our responsibility to make the very most of our life. On the flip side it’s very special to see your kid growing up!
Willow we are very proud of you and happy 5th birthday to you, go have fun at school, surround yourself with good people and hold out a hand to those who are in need.
