THE NEED FOR LEADERS WITH PURPOSE
As we awake to Valentines day and the overnight devastation that hit parts of New Zealand our thoughts are with those families who have lost their homes. Sending warm love to each and every one of you.
Leading up until very recently was all about ‘control & command’ Typically the executive table was full of men and they would dictate to their people what had to be done.
Thank god we live in a far more purposeful time where both men and women now lead our organisations (all be it within some industries we are lagging behind others).
Purpose used to be a slogan, a message, a buzz word that everyone would jump on the bandwagon and follow. For any leader and to that point any organisations to succeed into the future they must hire purpose driven leaders. Leaders who can inspire those around them onto better things, leaders who are not afraid to stand for ‘something’ leaders who are able to challenge the status quo, leaders who lead with heart, dignity and respect of his/her fellow human. Success will come to those who can take this approach by the scruff of it’s collar and own it!
Never before has the world needed leaders to be human, to forget that it’s ok to show your emotions, that it is ok to lead with heart. Their is no better time for leaders to stand tall and be proud of who they are and what they stand for. Empathy at it’s roots is the place to develop if you are looking to make a dent in the world. Empathy comes from within are you born with it or can you learn. Well I have never met a leader who wasn’t born, yet the great leaders are leaning into this with both feet as they realise the importance of it. In our 360 leadership assessments one aspect we hone in is Empathy – Leading With Empathy.
It is no longer accepted that a leader can bully his/her way to the outcome. They will be swiftly shown the door by it’s Board of Directors. If not the organisation will soon lose any credibility both from within and outside and the rest will take care of itself.
So my pointed question to you today on Valentines Day is this
- How are you leading, is it with genuine purpose!
- What is your ability to take a group of people to a place they never thought possible?
- Are you leading respectfully and without hidden agenda?
- Do your people see you as a purposeful leader or just a title?
